A good case is crucial when deploying iPads to students, weather as shared resource or a 1- 1 iPad project. iPads get dropped…. a lot. The screen is most vulnerable, especially when students take them out and about.
My top tips for features to consider are;
The screen needs protecting, cases that offer a clear screen cover are one solution, but not for young students. That protective plastic layer over the screen can prevent the touch screen working easily. Go for a case that has a good rounded protective area, so when the iPad is dropped the case stops the screen hitting the floor.
A case with a built-in, solid stand and is part of the case is also useful. Apples iPad covers do this well and many manufactures have incorporated this feature into their cases. A stand should be strong enough to allow user to use the iPad and type while stand is in use. Not a stand for viewing videos etc.
Case encroachment over screen.
As part of iOS 7, Apple introduced the Control Centre. A quick way to access Airdrop and Airplay, with a flick, from the bottom of the screen. Some cases prevent this from being easy. Make sure the case doesn’t spill over the screen, preventing access to this useful iOS7 feature.
Don’t get such a big, clumsy case that the mobility of the iPad is compromised. Also the iPads may not fit into a cart or charging trolly/box unit. Remember students, not army personal.
Mics, Camera, Action.
Some schools I’ve worked with, have purchased iPad cases that cover the mic, camera and charging ports with rubber flaps, making it hard for young students to use easily. Again fine for soldiers and marines, but not primary students or students with mobility issues. One of the main reasons for using the iPad, is that it’s quick and easy to use. Don’t let the case prevent that from happening.
Some cases have built in keyboards, this is a great feature for teachers and older students. The price of these cases is coming down all the time, but worth looking into.
Cases are crucial and if you can test run a few, brilliant! That will ensure you are on there right road to purchasing the right one for your students and teachers.
