Storytelling Workshops for Makers, Artists & Craft Artisans

Sell your work by sharing the story behind it.

You’ve spent hours, days, maybe weeks creating beautiful work. Then comes the hard bit: sitting behind a stall or in front of a camera, hoping people will stop, look… and buy.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen a brilliant maker half-hidden behind a table, reading a book so they don’t have to talk to anyone. It’s understandable – but it’s also a missed opportunity. Your work won’t always sell itself, especially at busy, competitive events like Christmas markets, open studios and craft fairs.

That’s where storytelling comes in.

Why stories sell

As customers, we rarely buy just the product. We buy the story that comes with it.

A good story helps people feel a sense of connection and belonging. It can reflect your values, beliefs, experiences, traditions and creative approach – without needing to say everything all at once.

A strong maker’s story is:

  • Simple and easy to repeat

  • Believable and rooted in your real experience

  • Full of authenticity – sincere, committed and clearly you

Your story should be something you can share naturally:

  • in conversation at a busy stall

  • in the “About” section of your website

  • across your social media, newsletters, labels and business cards

If you love your story and believe it, you’ll be happy to tell it again and again – and that consistency builds trust.

What’s Your Story? – the workshop

A two-part online workshop to help you:

  • Discover and shape your authentic story as a maker

  • Understand the key ingredients every good story should contain

  • Practise telling your story in different ways and situations

  • Build confidence talking about your work when it really matters

We’ll work in a small, supportive group, with time to reflect individually and share ideas together.

How it works

  • Format: Two online sessions

  • Platform: Zoom (simple to use, with time to work privately from your studio or home)

  • Who it’s for: Artists, makers and craft artisans who want to talk about their work with more clarity and confidence

I’ve successfully delivered this workshop online for over ten years to designers and app developers across the world. The online format makes it easier for many people to think, write and refine their stories in a comfortable, familiar space before sharing with others.

Reasons to attend

By the end of the workshop you will:

  • Understand why storytelling is crucial to selling your work

  • Create a personal story that’s genuinely connected to who you are and what you do

  • Gain confidence in talking about yourself and your creative practice

  • Clearly express your “why” – the reason you make what you make

  • Use your story and your why to guide future marketing decisions

  • Feel more confident about the value of your work

  • Find it easier to start meaningful conversations at fairs, pitches and markets

  • Be better able to shape and control the narrative when you’re selling
